BlueRing

Built workflows that connect farm, customs, quality, and logistics data into a traceable supply-chain record.

The product

BlueRing is Contained’s supply-chain data platform for making the journey of fresh produce visible from source to destination. It links records that normally live in separate systems—farm and husbandry data, manifests, customs, quality control, delivery, customer feedback, and finance—into a shared operational story.

That connected view gives supply-chain teams more than provenance. It makes live conditions, exceptions, and commercial signals available while there is still time to act on them. In one product demonstration, BlueRing traced a melon back to its field and husbandry details in 33 seconds.

From fragmented events to a traceable recordBlueRing connects operational data across the produce journey.

My contribution

As a full-stack developer in Offshorly’s delivery team, I contributed across the React and TypeScript frontend, Node.js backend services, and DynamoDB data layer on AWS. My work sat where complex supply-chain operations became usable product features: connecting interface behaviour, application logic, data, integrations, and AWS delivery infrastructure into coherent end-to-end workflows.

  • Built and evolved product functionality across ordering, tracking, and reporting modules.
  • Implemented full-stack workflows that connected user-facing tools with backend services and external data sources.
  • Worked with the team to turn a multi-year roadmap into incremental releases while keeping the platform’s modules consistent.
  • Supported integration-heavy features, including the data flows behind supply-chain visibility and compliance processes.
  • Worked within an AWS-based delivery stack spanning Lambda, DynamoDB, SES, CodeBuild, and GitHub Actions.

The engineering challenge

Fresh-produce trade crosses organisations, countries, and systems, but decisions still need to happen quickly. A useful platform had to reconcile records from many owners without flattening their meaning, surface the right information to each participant, and remain flexible enough to connect with enterprise and government systems such as HMRC.

The product evolved as a set of modular subsystems rather than one oversized workflow. A React and TypeScript interface supports operational users; Node.js services handle application and integration logic; DynamoDB stores operational data; and AWS services provide serverless execution, deployment, and notifications. The wider platform also connects with HMRC, Sage, ERP systems, and telemetry sources.

The 9AI integration

9AI is a standalone product rather than a module inside BlueRing. Their special integration gives each platform a clear responsibility: BlueRing collects, links, secures, and audits operational data; 9AI interprets that data alongside documents and business rules to support natural-language investigation, predictions, reporting, and workflow automation.

This creates a useful separation between the trusted operational record and the intelligence layer acting on it. BlueRing remains usable on its own, while connected teams can bring 9AI into specific workflows without replacing their existing systems or processes. See my work on 9AI.

Product impact

The wider team’s work produced a platform with both commercial and industry validation. Offshorly reports that the Contained engagement delivered 3× ROI in its first year, more than $68,000 in total savings, and reached break-even in month ten.

BlueRing was also adopted by Melon&Co to connect manifest data from farms in Brazil with live quality-control data captured when fruit arrived in the UK, then share the relevant outputs across the supply chain. That implementation won Best Agri Software System / Technologies Solutions Provider of the Year at the 2024 C4DTI Digital Trade Awards.

The platform also sits at the heart of Trusted Bytes, a £2.8 million Innovate UK-backed initiative focused on trusted data exchange, border processes, provenance, and productivity across the fresh-produce trade.

Let’s build something useful.
